Meghalaya Launches SIR Drive to Register Homeless and Vulnerable Voters

The Meghalaya State Election Commission has begun a special outreach programme to enrol homeless and vulnerable citizens in its voter registration drive.
Meghalaya's State Election Commission (SEC) has kicked off a targeted SIR (Special Initiative for Registration) drive aimed at bringing homeless and vulnerable sections of society onto the electoral roll. The outreach is part of the commission's broader effort to ensure that every eligible citizen can exercise the franchise in upcoming state elections.
Field teams are being deployed across urban and rural pockets of the state to identify individuals lacking permanent addresses, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups. Volunteers will assist them in completing registration forms, verifying identity documents and submitting applications at designated centres.
SEC officials say the initiative seeks to close gaps in the voter list, promote inclusive participation and strengthen the democratic process in Meghalaya. The drive will continue over the next few weeks, with periodic updates expected on the number of new registrations added.
