Chief Minister Sangma of Meghalaya has called for the Uniform Civil Code to take into account the state’s tribal and matrilineal character. He emphasized that any national framework should respect local customs.

Chief Minister Sangma of Meghalaya today urged lawmakers to incorporate the state’s distinct tribal and matrilineal traditions into the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He highlighted that Meghalaya’s social fabric is largely shaped by matrilineal clans and indigenous customs, which differ markedly from the patriarchal norms prevalent in other parts of India.

Sangma’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over the UCC, a national policy aimed at standardising civil laws across the country. He cautioned that a one‑size‑fits‑all approach could undermine the cultural identity of Meghalaya’s communities.

The Chief Minister called on the central government and the Union Law Ministry to conduct a thorough review of the UCC draft, ensuring that it respects the unique legal traditions of tribal societies. He also urged that any reforms be implemented with the active participation of local leaders and scholars.

While the UCC has been a long‑standing topic of discussion in Indian politics, Sangma’s statement underscores the need for regional sensitivity in its formulation.
