Meghalaya CM Announces Record Education Budget, Emphasises Quality

The Meghalaya government has allocated its highest ever spending on education and the chief minister says the next priority will be improving quality.
Shillong, Sept 17 (ANI) – Meghalaya's chief minister announced that the state has approved its largest ever allocation for the education sector in the current fiscal year. The budget, which surpasses previous years' spending, aims to expand infrastructure, recruit teachers and provide more learning resources across schools and colleges.
While the increased funding marks a financial milestone, the chief minister stressed that mere spending will not suffice. "We must now shift our focus to the quality of education, ensuring that every child receives a meaningful learning experience," he said during a press briefing.
The administration plans to channel the additional resources into teacher training programmes, digital classrooms, and regular assessment mechanisms. Officials also indicated that performance monitoring will be tightened to gauge the impact of the new investments.
Education experts welcomed the move, noting that higher expenditure combined with a quality‑centric approach could address long‑standing gaps in literacy and skill development in the hilly state.
The budget will be presented in the state assembly later this week for formal approval.
