In Frankfurt, masked youths demonstrated against education funding cuts, rising living costs and mandatory military service, but the rally escalated into vandalism and looting of several stores.
Masked demonstrators, identified as members of Germany's Gen Z, gathered in Frankfurt on Saturday to protest what they described as inadequate funding for education, soaring inflation and the introduction of compulsory military service. The march moved through the city centre, drawing participants from at least 34 German towns.
The protesters carried banners demanding higher public investment in schools and universities, while also voicing frustration over the cost of living and the new defence policy. Organisers said the rally was meant to be peaceful and to highlight the economic pressure on young people.
However, the demonstration turned chaotic when a segment of the crowd broke away and began smashing shop windows and looting merchandise. Police intervened, arresting several individuals and restoring order after a brief period of unrest. Authorities reported damage to multiple retail outlets but did not release a precise casualty count.
Local officials condemned the violence, urging citizens to express dissent through lawful means. The incident adds to a series of youth-led protests across Europe that have occasionally spilled over into property damage.
The police continue to investigate the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the looting.
