The state administration is weighing the use of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act to curb armed factions linked to recent violence in Manipur.

Manipur's chief minister's office said that the state is reviewing the possibility of invoking the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against armed groups that have been implicated in recent outbreaks of violence across the region. The move is being considered as part of a broader effort to restore law and order after a spate of clashes that have displaced thousands of residents.

UAPA, a central anti‑terror law, allows authorities to designate individuals or organisations as unlawful and to prosecute them for activities deemed a threat to national security. The act has been employed in other parts of the country to curb insurgency and extremist actions.

State officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that legal counsel is being consulted to assess the procedural steps required to invoke the legislation. They emphasized that any action would follow due process and would be aimed at dismantling the operational capabilities of the armed factions.

If the government proceeds, the decision could lead to the filing of charges under UAPA, potentially resulting in longer detention periods and stricter bail conditions for those arrested. The administration has not yet announced a final verdict, and the situation remains under close monitoring.
