The state government of Madhya Pradesh has invested crores to produce 50,000 Hindi‑language MBBS textbooks, but many medical students continue to opt for English editions.

The Madhya Pradesh government has recently announced the printing of 50,000 Hindi‑language MBBS textbooks, a project that cost several crores of rupees. The books are intended for students across the state’s medical colleges, aiming to make medical education more accessible to those who prefer or require instruction in Hindi.

The initiative was launched to address the language barrier faced by a significant portion of medical students who find the English‑only curriculum challenging. Distribution of the books will begin next semester, with copies allocated to all government medical institutions in the state.

Despite the availability of these Hindi texts, surveys and informal reports indicate that a large number of students still opt for English editions. Factors cited include the perception that English textbooks are more comprehensive, better aligned with national entrance exams, and more widely used in clinical practice.

The government has stated that it will continue to support students through scholarships and additional resources, while also encouraging colleges to incorporate bilingual teaching methods to bridge the gap between Hindi and English medical literature.
