Lavender cultivation, dubbed the ‘Purple Revolution’ in Jammu and Kashmir, is now being introduced in Nagaland and Mizoram, according to Jitendra Singh, the convener for Kashmir.
Jitendra Singh, the convener for Kashmir, announced that the lavender‑focused agricultural drive known as the ‘Purple Revolution’ is extending beyond Jammu and Kashmir to the northeastern states of Nagaland and Mizoram. The initiative, which began in J&K to diversify cropping patterns and boost farmer incomes, now aims to replicate its model in these new regions.
According to Singh, the state governments of Nagaland and Mizoram have expressed interest in cultivating lavender on suitable hill‑top farms, leveraging the crop’s low water requirement and high market value. Agricultural officers are expected to provide technical guidance, seed material and training to local farmers.
The expansion reflects a broader effort to introduce non‑traditional, high‑value crops across India’s varied agro‑ecological zones, offering alternative livelihoods to smallholders while tapping into growing domestic and export demand for essential oils and related products.
Stakeholders anticipate that successful adoption could create a niche supply chain for lavender oil, benefiting both farmers and processing units in the region. The rollout is slated to begin with pilot plots later this year.
