Bihar Aligns with Maharashtra, UP to Restrict Non‑Subsidised Fertiliser Sales

The Bihar government announced measures to limit the sale of non‑subsidised fertilisers, joining similar steps taken by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

New Delhi – The Bihar state administration has issued a directive to curb the distribution of fertilisers that are not covered under the government’s subsidy scheme. The move mirrors recent actions by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, which introduced similar restrictions to protect farmers from inflated input costs.

According to a statement from the Bihar Department of Agriculture, the policy will require retailers to verify the subsidy status of fertiliser batches before sale. Products lacking the subsidy label will be barred from retail outlets, and violations could attract penalties under existing agricultural regulations.

State officials said the measure aims to channel subsidised inputs to small and marginal farmers, ensuring that the benefits of the national fertiliser subsidy reach the intended beneficiaries. The department will coordinate with local agricultural extension officers to monitor compliance across districts.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over rising fertiliser prices and the need to stabilise agricultural production costs. By aligning its policy with Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, Bihar hopes to create a uniform market environment that discourages the unchecked sale of non‑subsidised chemicals.

Implementation is expected to begin within the next fortnight, with the department planning awareness campaigns for traders and farmers alike.
