The Kosi River, which flows through Bihar, is experiencing a rapid rise in water volume after intense monsoon rains in the upstream catchments of Nepal. On Friday night, the Bheemangar Barrage recorded a discharge of 2.88 lakh cubic feet per second (cusecs), while the Barah sector logged 2.48 lakh cusecs, according to data released by the state water department.
Hydrologists warn that the river could soon approach 3.30 lakh cusecs if the heavy precipitation continues, raising concerns about flooding in low‑lying districts of Bihar. Authorities have already opened 38 gates at the barrage to manage the surge and mitigate downstream impact.
The state disaster management agency is on high alert, monitoring river levels in real time and coordinating with local officials to prepare evacuation plans for vulnerable communities. Residents in flood‑prone areas have been advised to stay vigilant and follow official instructions.
No major breach or structural damage to the barrage has been reported so far, but officials stress that the situation remains fluid and dependent on weather patterns over the next 48 hours.
