A panel led by former Transport Commissioner K. Padmakumar has recommended altering the schedule of the free Priyadarshini bus service for women in Kerala to mitigate revenue losses faced by private bus operators.
The Kerala government’s free Priyadarshini bus service, which caters exclusively to women, has been a boon for commuters but has also led to significant revenue losses for private bus operators.
A newly formed expert panel, headed by former Transport Commissioner and retired IPS officer K. Padmakumar, has examined the issue and proposed a timetable overhaul to reduce overlap with private routes.
The committee recommends shifting the start times and adjusting the frequency of the Priyadarshini buses during peak hours, thereby easing the competitive pressure on private operators.
While the primary focus is on timing changes, the panel also suggested compensation measures for private bus companies to cushion the financial impact.
