Deputy Chief Minister K. Parameshwara warned that additional taluks in Karnataka could be declared drought‑affected as the state grapples with severe water scarcity.
Karnataka's senior minister K. Parameshwara announced that the state government is likely to expand the list of taluks classified as drought‑hit. The statement came amid reports of prolonged dry spells and falling groundwater levels across several districts.
Officials are reviewing water‑availability data and field reports to identify additional areas where agricultural output and drinking‑water supplies are under stress. The move aims to channel relief measures and financial assistance to the newly identified taluks.
Parameshwara emphasized that timely inclusion of affected regions is crucial for mobilising state resources, including drought‑relief funds and irrigation projects. The government will issue a formal notification once the assessment is complete.
Stakeholders, including farmer groups and local administrators, have been urged to cooperate with the assessment teams to ensure accurate mapping of water‑scarcity hotspots.
The expansion of the drought‑hit list reflects the broader challenge Karnataka faces in managing water resources amid erratic monsoon patterns and rising demand.
