The state has introduced India’s first institutional model to prepare customized climate action plans for every gram panchayat, aiming to protect the local environment.

Karnataka has begun implementing a Village Climate Plan that will see a separate climate action strategy prepared for each of the state’s 5,994 gram panchayats. The initiative is designed to address environmental protection at the grassroots level, tailoring measures to the specific ecological conditions of each village.

The plan, described as India’s first institutional model of its kind, requires every gram panchayat to develop a "Village-level Climate Action Plan" that aligns with local climate challenges and resources. By customizing strategies for individual villages, the state aims to enhance the effectiveness of climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.

State officials say the comprehensive rollout underscores Karnataka’s commitment to sustainable development and could serve as a blueprint for other regions in India. The initiative is expected to foster community participation, improve resource management, and contribute to broader national climate goals.

Implementation will be coordinated by the state’s Department of Rural Development and Environment, which will provide technical guidance and monitoring support to ensure each gram panchayat completes its plan in accordance with the prescribed framework.
