Latest agricultural data shows that the total area sown with pulses in India has risen above the level recorded in the previous year.

Official agricultural statistics released this week indicate that the land area devoted to pulse crops across India has exceeded the figure recorded for the previous year. The upward movement reflects a modest but notable expansion in the sowing of beans, lentils, chickpeas and other leguminous crops that form a staple of the Indian diet.

Pulses are a key source of plant‑based protein and play a vital role in soil health through nitrogen fixation. The increase in cultivated area is expected to bolster farmer incomes, especially in regions where rain‑fed agriculture dominates, and to contribute to the nation’s food‑security goals.

The Ministry of Agriculture has highlighted the growth as a positive sign ahead of the upcoming kharif season, while also urging continued adoption of improved seed varieties and sustainable farming practices to sustain the trend.
