The Indian Meteorological Department said a low‑pressure area over the Bay of Bengal could develop into a cyclone affecting Odisha, but urged the public not to panic.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely monitoring a developing low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal that could intensify into a cyclonic storm targeting the coastal districts of Odisha. Satellite imagery and sea‑surface temperature data indicate favourable conditions for further strengthening in the next 48 hours.

IMD officials have issued a preliminary advisory, stating that while the system has the potential to become a cyclonic storm, there is no immediate threat of landfall. Residents in vulnerable coastal areas have been asked to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading unverified information.

The department emphasized that no evacuation orders have been issued at this stage. Authorities are prepared to activate disaster response protocols if the system intensifies, and have urged fishermen to remain in safe harbours until the situation is clearer.

Historically, Odisha has faced severe cyclones, but the current advisory reflects a cautious approach, balancing preparedness with the need to prevent panic among the public.
