A two‑storey building on Gali Sitara in Old Delhi collapsed early today, killing two people and hampering rescue efforts because of the narrow lane.
A multi‑storey residential structure on Gali Sitara, a narrow lane in Old Delhi, gave way early this morning, resulting in the deaths of two occupants. Emergency services were alerted within minutes and arrived at the site to find the collapsed debris blocking the alley.
Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Service and local police faced significant difficulty navigating the cramped passage, which limited the use of heavy equipment and slowed the extraction of victims. Workers resorted to hand tools and ladders to reach trapped individuals, while onlookers were kept at a safe distance.
Officials confirmed that the two fatalities were residents of the building, and several others sustained minor injuries. An investigation has been launched to determine whether structural weaknesses or illegal modifications contributed to the collapse. The area remains cordoned off as authorities continue to clear the rubble and assess safety concerns for neighboring structures.
