The India Meteorological Department has raised a red alert, warning of very heavy rainfall across Odisha and the Gangetic belt of West Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, the highest warning level, for very heavy rainfall in the eastern states of Odisha and the Gangetic region of West Bengal. The alert follows forecasts of an intense monsoon system expected to bring widespread downpours.
Meteorologists project rainfall of more than 100 mm in many districts within the next 24‑48 hours, heightening the risk of flash floods, landslides and disruptions to transport and power supplies.
State disaster management authorities have been instructed to activate emergency response plans, pre‑position relief kits and keep rescue teams on standby. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to stay indoors, avoid low‑lying zones and follow official updates.
The IMD cautioned that the heavy rains could persist for several days, urging the public to remain vigilant and comply with any further advisories.
