ICAR’s Centre for Conservation, Advancement and Research in Indian Traditional Arts (CCARI) has announced a programme aimed at revitalising Goa’s dwindling bamboo craft industry, offering training and market linkages to local artisans.

ICAR’s Centre for Conservation, Advancement and Research in Indian Traditional Arts (CCARI) has unveiled a new programme designed to revive the bamboo craft sector in Goa, a craft that has seen a steady decline in recent years.

The initiative will provide skill‑development workshops for local artisans, focusing on contemporary design techniques while preserving traditional methods. It also aims to create direct market linkages, enabling craftsmen to reach wider audiences and secure better prices for their work.

According to the programme details, the first cohort of artisans will receive training in sustainable bamboo harvesting, product diversification, and digital marketing. CCARI plans to collaborate with local cooperatives and tourism boards to showcase Goa’s bamboo heritage.

Experts say that revitalising the craft could boost local employment and help preserve cultural heritage. The project is expected to run for three years, with periodic assessments to gauge impact on income levels and craft sustainability.
