An IAAS officer has warned that the Right to Information process in Nagaland is being exploited for profit, with intermediaries charging fees to file applications.
An officer of the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS) has raised concerns that the Right to Information (RTI) mechanism in Nagaland is being commercialised. The official, speaking to Eastern Mirror Nagaland, said that a network of intermediaries is charging applicants for filing RTI pleas, effectively turning a public‑service tool into a revenue‑generating venture.
RTI, enacted to promote transparency and accountability in government, allows citizens to request information from public authorities without cost beyond nominal fees. The alleged practice undermines this principle by creating a barrier for ordinary people who may lack the expertise or resources to file applications themselves.
The IAAS officer urged state authorities to investigate the matter and enforce stricter monitoring of RTI facilitation services. He emphasized that safeguarding the integrity of the RTI system is essential to maintain public trust in governance.
