Heavy Rain Triggers Water Ingress and Damage at Gupt Godavari Cave, Chitrakoot

Continuous downpours in Chitrakoot have caused water to seep into the Gupt Godavari cave, leading to rock gaps, falling stones and damage to the Shiva idol, prompting authorities to seal the site for safety.
The Gupt Godavari cave, located near Chitrakoot in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh, has been hit by a surge of water following several days of heavy rain. Officials report that the persistent rainfall has intensified seepage, creating new gaps in the layered rock formations that constitute the cave's interior.
As the water pressure increased, sections of the rock began to fracture, causing stones to dislodge and fall. The disturbance also damaged the shrine's central Shiva statue and the adjoining stone steps, rendering them unsafe for visitors.
In response, the local administration ordered an immediate closure of the cave to prevent any accidents. Safety teams have cordoned off the entrance while a team of geological and heritage experts has been summoned to assess the extent of the damage and recommend remedial measures.
