Heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has caused a series of landslides in the eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim. The most severe incidents were reported in the districts of Gyalshing and Mangan, where saturated soil and steep slopes led to sudden ground movements.
Local officials confirmed that at least 128 people were displaced from their homes in several villages, including Khangchendzonga and Rhenock. The landslides blocked major roads, cutting off access to nearby markets and health facilities.
The Sikkim Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) coordinated the evacuation, deploying rescue teams and setting up temporary shelters in nearby schools and community halls. All evacuees were provided with food, water and medical care.
Authorities urged residents in high‑risk areas to remain vigilant as rainfall continues and warned that further landslides could occur if the weather does not improve. The state government has activated its emergency response plan and is monitoring the situation closely.
