Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand as Monsoon System Strengthens

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) raised a heavy‑rain alert for the northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Monday, citing rapid intensification of a monsoon system moving across the region. Meteorologists noted that the trough, which has been gathering moisture over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to deepen and bring widespread precipitation over the next 48 hours.

IMD officials warned that the rainfall could be localized but intense, with the potential for flash floods in low‑lying areas and river basins. Residents in vulnerable districts have been advised to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep emergency kits ready.

Authorities in both states have mobilised disaster‑response teams and are monitoring water levels in rivers such as the Ganga and Yamuna. The alert comes as the monsoon season approaches its final phase, and officials are urging the public to heed warnings to minimise damage.
