A lawyer in Gujarat has served a legal notice to cinema chain PVR INOX, alleging that the company compelled customers to use the UPI payment system.

A Gujarat-based attorney has formally served a legal notice on the multiplex operator PVR INOX, claiming that the chain has forced moviegoers to transact exclusively through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The notice, filed in a local court, alleges that the mandatory use of UPI violates consumer choice and may breach existing payment regulations.

The lawyer contends that the cinema chain’s policy, implemented across its outlets in the state, leaves patrons with no alternative payment options such as cash, cards, or other digital wallets. He argues that this coercive practice could disadvantage sections of the public who are either unbanked or prefer other payment methods.

PVR INOX has not yet issued a public statement responding to the notice. The matter is expected to be examined by the court, which will determine whether the company’s payment policy complies with Indian consumer protection and payment norms.
