The Gujarat High Court has set aside the state government's prohibition on selling non‑vegetarian food within a 500‑metre radius of the Somnath Temple, restoring previous culinary practices.

The Gujarat High Court has nullified a government order that barred the sale of non‑vegetarian food within a defined perimeter around the historic Somnath Temple. The restriction, which had been enforced to respect religious sentiments, covered a radius of several hundred metres from the temple complex.

In its ruling, the court declared the ban unlawful and ordered its immediate removal, thereby allowing vendors to resume normal operations in the area. The judgment did not elaborate on detailed reasons, but it effectively restores the status quo that existed before the prohibition was imposed.

Local traders and residents welcomed the decision, saying it will revive business activity and reduce inconvenience for those who prefer non‑vegetarian meals. Some religious groups, however, have expressed disappointment, urging authorities to consider alternative ways to balance cultural sensitivities with commercial freedoms.
