The state of Gujarat has formally adopted the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) after receiving presidential assent, making it the second state in India to do so.

On Thursday, the Gujarat Legislative Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code bill, which had been pending since 2019. The bill received presidential assent from President Ram Nath Kovind on March 15, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the state's legal reforms.
The UCC aims to replace personal laws based on religion with a single set of civil laws applicable to all citizens. Gujarat’s adoption follows the earlier acceptance by the state of Rajasthan, making it the second state to implement the code.
Officials highlighted that the move seeks to promote gender equality and streamline legal processes across the state. However, the bill has attracted criticism from some religious groups who fear erosion of cultural practices.
Legal experts note that while the UCC is now part of Gujarat’s statute, its implementation will require amendments to existing laws and extensive public awareness campaigns.
