The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has cautioned broadcasters to avoid airing AI‑created news, graphic violence and unverified heated debates, citing potential violations of existing regulations.

New Delhi – The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a formal warning to all television broadcasters, urging them to refrain from telecasting news items generated by artificial intelligence, graphic violent content, and debates that could inflame public sentiment without proper verification. The advisory highlights growing concerns that AI‑driven deep‑fakes and synthetic footage may mislead viewers and undermine the credibility of news media.

In the notice, the ministry reminded channels of their obligations under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act and existing content guidelines, directing them to verify the authenticity of any AI‑produced material before airing. Broadcasters are also asked to seek clearance from the ministry when in doubt about the suitability of such content.

The ministry warned that failure to comply could attract penalties as stipulated by the regulatory framework, though specific punitive measures were not detailed in the advisory. Officials emphasized that the move aims to safeguard public discourse and maintain standards of responsible broadcasting.

The warning comes amid a broader national debate on the impact of emerging technologies on media integrity, with regulators seeking to balance innovation against the risk of misinformation.
