Government to Distribute Maternal and Child Care Kits to Mothers Nationwide

The central government announced a scheme to provide free maternal and child care kits to all mothers across the country.
New Delhi – The Union Health Ministry unveiled a nationwide programme that will supply free maternal and child care kits to every mother, irrespective of income level. The kits are expected to contain essential items such as sanitary pads, baby diapers, oral rehydration salts, vitamin supplements and basic hygiene products, aimed at improving health outcomes for mothers and infants.
The scheme, slated to begin in the upcoming fiscal quarter, will be rolled out through existing public health infrastructure, including Primary Health Centres and Anganwadi centres. State health departments have been instructed to coordinate distribution and maintain a real‑time inventory to avoid shortages.
Officials say the initiative aligns with the government's broader goal of reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, as highlighted in recent health policy reviews. A senior ministry spokesperson noted that the kits will reach an estimated 30 million mothers in the first year, with periodic assessments to gauge impact.
The programme also includes an awareness component, wherein health workers will educate mothers on proper usage of the kit items and basic newborn care practices. Funding for the scheme has been earmarked in the current budget, reflecting the administration's commitment to strengthening primary health services.
