The central government has cleared a proposal to raise the retirement age for judicial officers from 60 to 62 years.
New Delhi – The Union Cabinet gave its nod to a long‑awaited amendment that will extend the retirement age of all judicial officers from 60 to 62 years. The decision, announced through an official press release, follows recommendations from the Law Ministry and the Supreme Court’s administrative committee.
The move aims to retain experienced judges for a longer period, addressing concerns about a shrinking pool of senior magistrates and high‑court judges. Officials said the change will become effective from the next financial year, with existing officers transitioning to the new limit as they approach retirement.
Stakeholders, including bar associations and senior advocates, have welcomed the step, noting that it could improve case‑flow management and reduce vacancies. The government has indicated that related procedural guidelines will be issued shortly to ensure a smooth implementation across all courts.
