A gas pipeline ruptured while workers were excavating a water line in Suman Nagar, Indore on Saturday evening, causing a rapid leak but averting a major disaster. The incident follows a similar pipeline breach in the same locality a few months earlier.
On Saturday evening, crews digging a water supply line in the Suman Nagar neighbourhood of Indore accidentally struck a gas pipeline, leading to an immediate and forceful leak. The rupture released gas at a high pressure, prompting nearby residents to evacuate the area as a precautionary measure.
Local emergency services arrived promptly, sealed off the affected section of the pipeline and ventilated the surrounding zone to prevent ignition. No injuries were reported, and authorities confirmed that the swift response averted a potentially catastrophic explosion.
The incident mirrors a similar pipeline breach that occurred in the same locality a few months ago, raising concerns about the safety of underground utilities in rapidly developing urban zones. Municipal officials have pledged a review of excavation protocols and stricter coordination with utility companies to mitigate future risks.
Residents were advised to remain vigilant and report any unusual odors or signs of gas leakage while the repair work continued throughout the night.
The city’s public works department has scheduled a comprehensive audit of all underground pipelines in the area to ensure compliance with safety standards.
