The Gandak river embankment at Paru in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, gave way early on, creating a visible breach that allowed river water to surge onto the low‑lying fields. Officials confirmed that the failure occurred along an older section of the flood protection wall, which had been in place for several decades.
Within minutes of the breach, water began to flow rapidly towards adjacent habitations, inundating farmland and entering the outskirts of several villages. Residents reported a sudden rise in water level that sparked panic, as families rushed to higher ground and sought shelter.
District Magistrate (DM) Amit Kumar arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and established a temporary command camp to coordinate rescue and relief operations. The DM’s team is monitoring the situation, deploying sandbags where possible, and liaising with the state disaster management authority for additional support.
