Flamingos Gather at Thoothukudi Salt Pans, Experts Urge Habitat Protection

DD News reported that sizable flocks of migratory flamingos have arrived at the salt pans surrounding Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. The birds, which travel from their breeding grounds in Central Asia, are using the shallow, brackish waters as a stop‑over during their seasonal migration.

Local ornithologists and environmentalists have visited the site and highlighted the ecological importance of the salt pans, noting that the mudflats provide feeding grounds rich in algae and small invertebrates. They warned that unchecked industrial activity or unregulated salt‑extraction could degrade the habitat and jeopardise the flamingos' seasonal refuge.

The experts called on state authorities to enforce existing wildlife protection regulations and to consider designating the area as a protected bird sanctuary. They also urged community participation in monitoring and preserving the wetlands to ensure that the flamingos continue to find a safe haven in Tamil Nadu each year.
