The state government announced modest measures aimed at safeguarding the vulnerable Bengal fox and golden jackal populations in Tamil Nadu.
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department, in collaboration with wildlife experts, has outlined a set of preliminary actions to curb the decline of two native carnivores – the Bengal fox (Vulpes bengalensis) and the golden jackal (Canis aureus). These species, listed as vulnerable in the state’s wildlife assessment, face threats from habitat loss, road mortality and human‑wildlife conflict.
The initial measures include mapping critical habitats, installing signage near known crossing points, and launching awareness programmes in villages adjacent to forest fragments. The department also plans to train forest guards in species identification and non‑lethal conflict mitigation techniques.
Officials said the steps are part of a broader conservation strategy that will later incorporate habitat restoration and scientific monitoring. While the actions are modest, they signal the state’s intent to address the declining numbers of these indigenous canids.
