Five children from the Baiga tribe died and fifteen severely malnourished children were admitted to a hospital in Kabirdham district, raising concerns over possible healthcare negligence.
Kabirdham district in Chhattisgarh reported the deaths of five Baiga tribal children after they were taken to a local government hospital for treatment. The children, aged between two and six years, had been suffering from acute malnutrition and related complications.
In the same facility, fifteen other children from the Baiga community, also diagnosed with severe malnutrition, were admitted for intensive care. Hospital staff said the patients were placed on therapeutic feeding regimens, but families complained that basic medical supplies and monitoring were inadequate.
Local health officials have launched an inquiry into the incident, acknowledging gaps in the district’s nutrition and child‑health programs. The district medical officer said a senior team will review case records and assess whether lapses in protocol contributed to the fatalities.
Community leaders have demanded swift corrective action and better outreach to prevent further loss of life among vulnerable tribal populations. The state health department has pledged additional resources for nutrition supplementation and training of frontline workers in the region.
