Boats registered to Karwar were observed sailing near Goa's shoreline, prompting fishermen from the Colva fishing community to call for immediate action.
The coastal patrol of Goa reported the sighting of several vessels bearing Karwar registration sailing close to the state's shoreline on Monday. Local authorities confirmed that the boats were operating within the usual fishing zone but their proximity raised concerns among nearby fishing communities.
Fishermen from the Colva village, a prominent fishing hub in South Goa, gathered at the local harbor to voice their apprehensions. They argued that the presence of out-of-state boats could strain marine resources and jeopardise their livelihood, urging the state government to intervene and enforce stricter monitoring.
The Goa Fisheries Department said it would review the incident and coordinate with the Karnataka fisheries officials to ensure compliance with inter‑state fishing regulations. Meanwhile, the Colva community plans to hold a peaceful demonstration tomorrow to press for decisive action.
No injuries or property damage have been reported, and the boats are currently believed to be returning to their home port in Karwar.
