The Food and Drug Administration has shut the BMC‑run canteen at Kalwa Hospital after a cockroach was discovered in a patient’s meal, citing serious hygiene violations.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the immediate closure of the BMC‑run canteen at Kalwa Hospital in Thane district after a cockroach was found in a patient’s food.
The incident was reported by hospital staff who discovered the insect while preparing a meal for a patient. The FDA cited the presence of the cockroach as evidence of serious hygiene lapses that could jeopardise patient safety.
BMC officials have said they are cooperating with the FDA and will conduct a thorough inspection of the canteen’s facilities. The hospital has suspended all food service operations pending the outcome of the investigation.
The closure underscores the importance of strict food safety standards in healthcare settings, especially in the wake of rising concerns over hospital hygiene across Maharashtra.
