Farmers’ Association to Hold Protest on September 28 Demanding Declaration of Raichur as Severe Drought-Affected District
Raichur, September 26: Due to inadequate monsoon rainfall, drought-like conditions have developed across Raichur district. Demanding that the government declare Raichur a severely drought-affected district and directly credit crop-loss compensation to farmers’ bank accounts, the district unit of the Karnataka State Farmers’ Association has announced a protest on September 28.
A press conference was held at the Tourist Rest House in Jalahalli, Devadurga taluk, under the leadership of Hanumagowda Mali Patil, District Vice-President of the Karnataka State Farmers’ Association.
The protest will be held in front of the Raichur Deputy Commissioner’s Office at 10:00 a.m. on September 28. The association has appealed to farmers from across the district to participate in large numbers.
Due to the shortage of rainfall, crops including tur, cotton, paddy and pearl millet have reportedly been affected. Agricultural labourers are also facing a shortage of employment. The association urged the government to take the farmers’ difficulties seriously and initiate immediate relief measures.
Major Demands of the Farmers’ Association
🔹 Conduct a scientific assessment of crop losses in drought-affected areas and immediately credit compensation directly to farmers’ bank accounts.
🔹 Provide adequate fodder and drinking water for livestock.
🔹 Clear silt and jungle growth from the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal and the distributaries of the Narayanpur Right Bank Canal, and ensure adequate water supply to farmers at the tail-end areas.
🔹 Provide 12 hours of adequate electricity to farmers’ pump sets, including 6 hours during the day and 6 hours at night.
🔹 Immediately release pending payments to farmers who have already sold maize at procurement centres. GPS-based crop assessment should be carried out for maize without distinguishing between the Kharif and Rabi seasons.
🔹 Change the water-release schedule of the Narayanpur Right Bank Canal from the existing 10 days closed–14 days running system to a 7 days closed–14 days running system.
🔹 Prevent the alleged collection of unauthorised commissions from farmers and the practice of deducting ‘suit’ charges at the Lingasugur and Mudgal APMCs.
🔹 Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, compensation should be credited directly to the bank accounts of farmers who have paid the premium, without any intermediaries.
The Karnataka State Farmers’ Association urged the government to urgently fulfil the various demands of farmers and appealed to farmers across the district to participate in large numbers in the protest scheduled for September 28.
