Environmentalists have voiced strong opposition to the increasing practice of decorating trees with lights for festivals, warning of ecological damage.

Environmental groups across India have publicly condemned the rising habit of illuminating trees during festivals such as Diwali and Christmas. The ecologists argue that the practice, while visually appealing, leads to unnecessary energy consumption and contributes to carbon emissions.

Scientists point out that the bright lights can disrupt nocturnal wildlife, especially birds and insects that rely on natural darkness for feeding and breeding. In addition, the use of disposable electric decorations often results in plastic waste that pollutes urban and rural landscapes.

The experts are urging authorities and the public to adopt more sustainable alternatives, such as LED lights with lower power ratings, solar‑powered decorations, or simply focusing illumination on public spaces rather than on living trees. They stress that festive celebrations need not come at the cost of the environment.
