DYFI–SFI Stage Protest Against SIR
Concerns Over Voting Rights; Protesters Demand Cancellation of Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls
Devadurga, October 9: Demanding the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, protesters under the leadership of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students' Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest at Ambedkar Circle in Devadurga on Thursday.
The protesters also demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar from office and legal action against him, alleging that the SIR process could threaten the voting rights of eligible Indian citizens.
Addressing the gathering, construction workers' leader Shabbir alleged that the Union Government was misusing various government institutions. He expressed concern that the SIR process being implemented through the Election Commission could result in eligible Indian voters losing their voting rights. He asserted that students and youth would not tolerate such a situation.
He said protests were being organised across the country as a continuation of the agitation held in Bengaluru. He also warned that youth would unite to launch a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi in the coming days.
CITU leader Giriyappa Poojari, addressing the gathering, alleged that the privatisation of government institutions was affecting employment opportunities for young people. He said the promotion of expensive private education was weakening the right to education and alleged that attempts were being made to suppress student movements.
He further alleged that those questioning the Union Government were being branded as anti-national, thereby undermining their right to question the government. He warned that the people of the country would not tolerate any attempt to undermine the voting rights guaranteed by the Constitution drafted under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
He cautioned that youth-led protests would intensify in the coming days and said the Union Government would be responsible for the consequences.
Student leader Mahalinga Doddamani also addressed the gathering.
DYFI district president Raju Nayak, secretary Riyaz Arti, Venkatesh Tyapli, Mallu Gowdar, SFI taluk president Santosh Tyapli, vice-president Babu Shaneradoddi, Vinay Kumar, Dil Shah, Kondaiya Gosal, Ninganna, Maqsood, Arif, Shivaraj Poojari Doddi, Ranganath, Shivaraj and Manjunath, among others, participated in the protest.
