Delhi’s Air Quality Index Surges to 216 in One Day, Raising Pollution Concerns

The capital’s Air Quality Index leapt from a moderate 65 to a hazardous 216 within 24 hours, prompting officials to warn of further deterioration.

Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) shot up from 65, a moderate level, to 216, classified as hazardous, in just one day, according to data released by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee. The rapid rise places the city’s air quality in the ‘very unhealthy’ bracket, urging residents to limit outdoor activities and wear masks.

Health officials have cautioned that the spike could be a precursor to a longer‑term worsening of pollution, especially if prevailing weather patterns trap pollutants close to the ground. Stagnant air, low wind speeds and temperature inversions are typical contributors that can amplify particulate matter concentrations.

The city administration has already activated emergency response measures, including temporary restrictions on construction activities, increased monitoring of industrial emissions, and advisories for commuters to use public transport. Experts say sustained vigilance and coordinated action will be essential to prevent the AQI from climbing further.

Residents are advised to stay informed through official alerts and to adopt protective steps such as using N95 masks, keeping windows closed during peak pollution hours, and limiting outdoor exercise until air quality improves.
