The Central Pollution Control Board has ordered a halt to all construction activities and a 50% work‑from‑home mandate in Delhi‑NCR from November 5 to 20 to curb the region’s severe air pollution.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) announced on Tuesday that all construction activities in the Delhi‑NCR region will be suspended from November 5 to 20. In addition, the board has mandated that at least 50% of the workforce in the region work from home during the same period.

The directive comes as the region’s air quality index has consistently breached the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, with particulate matter (PM2.5) levels reaching hazardous levels. Authorities say that construction dust and vehicular emissions are major contributors to the deteriorating air quality.

Under the new rule, construction companies are required to halt all site operations and secure materials. Municipalities will monitor compliance, and penalties will be imposed for violations. The 50% work‑from‑home requirement applies to all government offices and private firms that can operate remotely.

The move is expected to reduce particulate emissions by an estimated 20% during the ban period, providing a temporary respite for residents suffering from respiratory ailments. However, business owners warn that the halt could disrupt supply chains and increase costs.
