Delhi University announced plans to more than double its hostel accommodation to 12,754 seats, citing student safety as a key driver.

Delhi University has disclosed a major expansion of its residential facilities, aiming to raise the total number of hostel seats to 12,754. The move will more than double the current capacity and is part of a broader effort to address growing demand for on‑campus accommodation.

University officials said the decision was prompted by recent safety concerns raised by students and parents, including reports of overcrowding and inadequate security in existing hostels. By increasing the number of beds, the administration hopes to provide safer, more comfortable living conditions and reduce the need for students to seek off‑campus housing.

The expansion will be rolled out in phases over the next two academic years, with new constructions and renovations slated for both the North and South campuses. The university expects the additional seats to accommodate an estimated 5,000 extra students, thereby easing pressure on the current hostel system.
