The Union Government has cleared a fund of Rs 993.64 crore to modernise National Highway 10 in Sikkim, aiming to improve connectivity and safety on the mountainous route.
New Delhi has given the green light to a Rs 993.64 crore package for the upgrade of NH‑10 in the northeastern state of Sikkim. The funding, cleared by the central ministries, will be channelled through the National Highways Authority of India to widen lanes, reinforce bridges and install safety features along the stretch that links the state capital with the border regions.
The project is expected to address long‑standing bottlenecks caused by narrow carriageways and landslide‑prone sections, thereby reducing travel time for commuters and freight operators. Officials said the upgrade will also boost tourism by providing smoother access to popular hill stations and pilgrimage sites.
Implementation will be carried out in phases, with the first stage focusing on the critical segment between Rangpo and Gangtok. The central government has earmarked the funds under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, reflecting its commitment to strengthening infrastructure in remote Himalayan areas.
State authorities have welcomed the allocation, noting that improved road conditions will spur economic activity and create employment opportunities for local communities. The project is slated to commence later this year, subject to detailed project reports and clearances.
