The Union Government has cleared a funding package of Rs 993.64 crore to widen and strengthen National Highway 10 in Sikkim, aiming to improve connectivity and boost regional development.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has sanctioned a total of Rs 993.64 crore for the development of National Highway 10 in the state of Sikkim. The allocation will fund the widening, strengthening of pavement, and construction of bypasses along the 174‑kilometre stretch that links the state capital Gangtok with the border town of Rangpo.
Improving NH‑10 is expected to reduce travel time, lower vehicle operating costs and enhance safety for commuters and freight operators. The upgraded corridor will also support Sikkim's tourism sector, which relies heavily on road access to its hill stations and pilgrimage sites.
The project will be executed under the aegis of the National Highways Authority of India in coordination with the Sikkim state government. Detailed project reports have been prepared, and construction is slated to begin in the next fiscal year, with an anticipated completion timeline of three to four years.
Stakeholders anticipate that the improved highway will stimulate economic activity in the region, attract investment, and strengthen strategic connectivity to the Indo‑China border areas adjacent to Sikkim.
