Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the entire railway network in Assam is now electrified, marking a milestone in the region’s transport infrastructure.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the railway network across Assam has been fully electrified, completing the state’s electrification drive under the Indian Railways agenda. The achievement eliminates the need for diesel locomotives on all routes within the state, promising faster and more environmentally friendly train services.

The minister highlighted that the move aligns with the national target of 100% railway electrification by 2025 and will reduce carbon emissions while lowering operating costs for the railways. Officials said the project involved installing overhead electric lines, substations and related infrastructure along the entire network.

State officials expect the fully electrified network to boost freight and passenger movement, supporting economic growth in the Northeast. The completion also paves the way for newer electric rolling stock to be deployed, enhancing connectivity with neighboring states.

The announcement was made during a briefing in New Delhi, where the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to modernising transport infrastructure across the country.
