Following a serious crash at the Khetri toll plaza, the Assam Congress party has demanded an immediate, statewide suspension of all toll collections, labeling the move a comprehensive safety response.
The Assam Congress party issued a formal appeal on Tuesday, urging the state government to halt toll collection across Assam after a major crash at the Khetri toll plaza. Party leaders described the incident as a stark reminder of safety lapses on toll roads and argued that a piecemeal approach would be insufficient.
In a press statement, the Congress delegation said the suspension should apply to all toll points in the state until a thorough safety audit is completed. They called on the National Highways Authority of India and the Assam Road Transport Authority to cooperate in reviewing the design, signage and emergency response mechanisms at toll plazas.
The party also pledged to mobilise public support, planning rallies and petitions to pressurise the government. While the state transport department has not yet responded, officials indicated that an investigation into the Khetri crash is underway and that any policy changes will be based on the findings.
