Activists in Arunachal Pradesh say a proposed mega dam threatens local livelihoods, while authorities have imposed censorship and police crackdowns on the protests.

Arunachal Pradesh’s government has moved ahead with a large‑scale dam project that local communities fear will displace families and destroy traditional ways of life. Protesters have taken to the streets, demanding a halt to construction and a transparent impact assessment.

According to activists, the dam’s reservoir will flood extensive agricultural land and forest areas, jeopardising the livelihoods of tribal populations. They have warned that "their life will be destroyed" if the project proceeds without proper safeguards.

In response, state officials have reportedly restricted media coverage of the demonstrations and deployed police units to disperse gatherings. Several protestors claim they have faced intimidation and arrests under vague security provisions.

Human‑rights groups have called for an independent review of the project’s environmental and social impact, urging the government to respect the right to free expression and assembly. The situation remains tense as negotiations between the authorities and community leaders continue.

The dam, touted by the state as a catalyst for regional development and hydro‑electric power generation, is now at the centre of a broader debate over development versus displacement in India’s northeastern frontier.
