Arunachal Rights Body Supports Locals, Calls for Halt to Siang River Project Surveys

A rights body operating in Arunachal Pradesh has publicly endorsed the concerns of local residents who are opposing the proposed Siang River hydro‑electric project. The organization has called on the state government to suspend all ongoing geological surveys and drilling activities linked to the scheme.

The affected communities contend that the project could disrupt the fragile river ecosystem, threaten biodiversity and lead to displacement of indigenous populations. They argue that the consent of the people and a thorough environmental impact assessment have not been adequately addressed.

In response, the rights body submitted a formal memorandum to the Arunachal Pradesh administration, demanding an immediate halt to field work until proper clearances are secured and community grievances are resolved. The memorandum also seeks a review of the project's compliance with national environmental and tribal welfare laws.

State officials have not yet issued a statement on the request, and the project’s proponents maintain that the surveys are essential for assessing feasibility. The standoff highlights the growing tension between development initiatives and indigenous rights in the northeastern region.
