The chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh asserted that the people of the Siang district are innocent and have been misled by groups opposing the Siang Upper Middle Project (SUMP).
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said on Thursday that the residents of the Siang district are not responsible for the controversy surrounding the Siang Upper Middle Project (SUMP). He described the local populace as "innocent" and "misguided" by organisations that oppose the project. Khandu added that these anti‑project groups are attempting to create unrest by spreading misinformation among the community.
The SUMP, a multi‑billion‑rupee infrastructure initiative aimed at harnessing the Siang River's potential, has faced opposition from environmentalists and some local activists. While the government maintains that the project will boost regional development and energy generation, critics argue it could threaten ecological balance and displacement.
Khandu urged the state administration to counter the alleged propaganda and ensure that the project proceeds without further delay. He also called for a transparent dialogue with stakeholders to address genuine concerns, emphasizing that any dissent should be based on factual information rather than organized agitation.
