A strong odour near the Hurl fertilizer plant in Begusarai on Monday morning caused eye irritation, dizziness, choking and vomiting among schoolchildren and teachers, who reported possible ammonia gas leakage.

On Monday morning, a pungent smell spread rapidly around the Hurl fertilizer plant in Begusarai, Bihar, prompting panic among nearby residents. Several schoolchildren and teachers who were present at the scene reported symptoms such as eye irritation, choking sensation, dizziness and vomiting.

Local witnesses immediately alleged that an ammonia gas leak was responsible for the foul odour and the health complaints. Emergency services were called, and affected individuals were taken to nearby health centres for observation and basic treatment.

The management of the Hurl plant, however, denied any gas leak, stating that their operations were within normal safety parameters. Authorities have launched an on‑site inspection to verify the cause of the incident and to ensure compliance with industrial safety regulations.

Health officials have advised residents to avoid the area until the investigation is completed and to seek medical attention if symptoms persist. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about industrial emissions in densely populated regions.
