The Ministry of Defence has announced that the tenure for Agniveer recruits will be increased from four to six years, marking a significant policy shift.

The Indian Ministry of Defence disclosed a revision to the Agniveer scheme, stating that the contractual service period for newly inducted Agniveer personnel will rise from four to six years. The change was announced in a recent official communication and is positioned as a major update to the country's reserve force framework.

Under the original terms, Agniveers served a four-year stint before transitioning to civilian life or opting for extended service. The new directive extends this period by two years, thereby lengthening the total commitment to six years for all future entrants.

Officials indicated that the extension aims to deepen the skill set of the reserve force, improve operational readiness, and provide greater continuity in manpower planning. The amendment is expected to take effect for the next batch of recruits, although the precise implementation date was not disclosed.

Stakeholders, including defence analysts and recruitment agencies, have noted that a longer tenure could enhance the experience base of the reserves while also offering recruits a more stable career window before they return to the civilian sector.
