Shanti, a local activist, urged authorities in Jalandhar to set up dedicated prison accommodations for female inmates.

Jalandhar, Punjab – In a public statement, local activist Shanti appealed to the state and district prison authorities to create separate detention facilities exclusively for women. She highlighted the lack of dedicated spaces for female inmates, arguing that current arrangements force women to share overcrowded cells designed for male prisoners.

Shanti said that the absence of gender‑specific infrastructure compromises the safety, privacy, and rehabilitation prospects of women behind bars. She cited examples from other Indian states where separate women's prisons have reduced incidents of abuse and improved access to health and legal services.

The activist’s demand comes amid broader discussions on prison reforms across the country. While officials have not yet issued a formal response, the call adds pressure on the Punjab government to review its correctional‑facility policies and allocate resources for a women‑only prison in the Jalandhar region.

Stakeholders, including human‑rights groups, are expected to monitor the situation closely, urging swift action to address the gender gap in the penal system.
